Many of you have asked us how to install a red dot using a mounting adapter, so today we’re going to explain the step-by-step process to this very DIY friendly option. In this example video below, we have an Outer Impact adapter, Holosun 507c and a Glock 17.
Step 1: Test Fit Using The Pattern Guide
The first thing we’re going to do is check out the Outer Impact pattern guide and find the Holosun 507c pattern.
I recommend seeing what the dot will look like before you actually install it to the your slide, so test fit it. Doing that will ensure that the screws don’t poke out underneath and potentially scratch the slide. So line up the pins in the proper pattern based on the diagram, and tighten the screws - without Blue Loctite.
A quick check underneath will confirm nothing is poking out, which is what you want to see. Then undo everything you just set up.
Step 2: Remove Rear Sight
To install red dots onto slides using an adapter you’ll need a way to remove the rear sight. In the video above I was using a site remove tool. Make sure the block pushing the rear sites is above the slide so you don’t scratch it. The one I used had a little hole on the side to verify it was good.
Step 3: Install The Dovetail
Next step is to install the dovetail. Literally push it through the opening and align it until it’s centered.
Step 4: Click In Mounting Plate
When you put the Outer Impact adapter plate onto the slide, you have to put a bit of pressure onto it and you’ll hear it click.
Step 5: Tighten Screws
Next, making sure blue loctite is applied, you apply the two screws that attach to the dovetail. These need to be tightened to 25 inch/pounds. But first we’ll start by tightening them evenly to 15 inch/pounds. Then tighten to 20 inch/pounds and finally 25 inch/pounds.
This is what the slide adapter looks like attached to the slide.
Step 6: Attach Pins & Red Dot
So we’ll insert the alignment pins again like we did during the test fit. And then slide on the 507c and obviously screw it in.
And this is what it looks like installed.
Final Thoughts
Overall installation is super easy, and very DIY friendly. It takes a couple of minutes with the proper tools.
The Holosun 507c is a great optic for this gun. It has a multi reticle feature letting me pick between a 2 moa dot, 32 Moa circle, or combined. It also has a shake awake awake feature and auto brightness setting with a battery life of 50,000 hours.
