The SCS-MOS (Solar Charging Sight) is a direct attachment optic for full-size GLOCK™ MOS systems offering the lowest profile deck height for use with standard-height iron sights. The SCS-MOS combines solar power, rechargeable power storage, an auto-adjusting reticle brightness system with override function to potentially operate indefinitely in multiple lighting conditions.
First let’s start with what SCS-MOS even means. SCS is a term from Holosun and it stands for Solar Charging Sight. MOS is a term from Glock which means Modular Optic System. So it’s a Solar Charging Sight that fits on Glock’s Modular Optic System pistols. Glock’s MOS system is literally just a cut out on their slide that makes it extremely easy to mount optics without having to use an adapter.
The SCS-MOS is for full-sized Glock’s with the MOS system, except Glock 43 and 48 because they are the slim-line versions.
At first I thought, is it weird that Holosun made an optic just for Glock? But Glock offers some of the best selling pistols so not really, there’s probably tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of MOS Glocks out there.
So let’s take a look at this green dot and what makes it unique other than its footprint. First off, the SCS-MOS green dot offers the lowest profile deck height which allows you to use the standard-height iron sights, which is a very nice feature to have.
Next, the dot only has 1 button unlike the K and C Holosun series. This one button powers the green dot on and off, as well as changes the reticle and brightness. To power on the SCS you long press the button for 1 second. By default the 2 MOA dot + 32 MOA circle will show. To cycle through the different reticle options and turn off the dot, you long press the button again. First it’s the default dot-circle, then it’s just the 2 MOA dot, followed by just the 32 MOA circle, and when pressed one last time the SCS will power off.
You could also override the brightness of the SCS with the same button. Like the 407C/507C the SCS uses an auto brightness setting that automatically adjusts to your environment. If the brightness level is insufficient, you can quickly press the button, which overrides the auto brightness and kicks up the brightness a few levels. This will automatically deactivate after 30 minutes. If you want to cancel before 30 minutes is up, press the button again and it’ll go back to auto brightness.
Now the biggest feature this optic has is the battery and how it operates with the solar panels. Unlike the K and C series, you can not access the battery. The battery is not removable. Instead, the SCS uses an international rechargeable battery that gives it essentially an unlimited lifetime.
The way the battery works is when ambient lighting is insufficient, the SCS is powered by the internal battery. And when the ambient lighting is sufficient, the solar cell automatically charges the internal battery. So the solar panel on the green dot charges the battery instead of supplementing it, like the C series. The cool part is the lights even inside at the range are enough to keep the SCS charging even when it’s being used. Now I know some people are going to have battery fears, BUT in the most extreme case, 12 micro-amp-hours of power will be consumed when the circle-dot mode is used for 10 hours and the SCS can charge 100 micro-amp-hours when charging outside for 1 hour. So the rate of charge is much higher than the power consumption rate, so during normal use there is virtually no need to worry about battery power consumption.
As far as its size and weight, it weighs only 1.3 ounces. It’s slightly bigger than the 407 or 507k. It’s 1.93 inches long, 1.03 inches wide, and 0.91 inches tall. It has a grade 5 titanium housing, which is a good upgrade from the K and C series 7075 T6 Aluminum. The window size is the same as the K series, it’s 0.58 by 0.77 inches.
It also has an IP67 rating, which offers complete protection from dust and protects against the effects of temporary immersion in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes.
One of the awesome extras of the SCS is it has an awesome side profile that continues the slide cut outs of the Glock. That’s a nice touch from Holosun.
Like the C and K series, this sight has been factory zeroed to approximately 25 yards. And to adjust it is 1 MOA per click. And to adjust the elevation is located on the top-rear of the housing, and the windage adjustment is located on the right side of the housing.
In the box includes the mounting screws, the user manual, a lens cloth, and a multi tool to adjust the elevation and windage.
Overall the unlimited battery life, titanium housing, and ease of insulation makes this a top optic choice for Glock MOS owners. If you’re interested in purchasing this or learning about the SCS or other Holosun products, check out FreedomGorilla.com
