Hey Freedom Gorillas, today we want to give you the skinny on the Holosun SPR Reticle. The Holosun SPR Reticle is a new addition to the Holosun ARO-EVO rifle optic. If you’re looking for an optic that has the speed of a red dot for up close or real usable holdovers for shooting up to several hundred yards, the SPR is a great choice.
In this Holosun SPR reticle overview, we want to discuss how the SPR works, what makes it stand out, and how to use and control it.
So let’s get into it:
TLDR
Holosun’s SPR, or Special Purpose Reticle, is a new reticle for the Holosun ARO EVO rifle optic that improves on the MRS for certain applications. The SPR features a 1.5 MOA center dot, 65 MOA circle, 3 1 MOA BDC dots, and 3 horizontal ranging lines that represent an 18” wide target. The 3 BDC dots and ranging lines are configured for a reference point of impact at 300, 400, and 500 yards.

The SPR reticle has four configurations: dot only; circle and dot; circle, dot, and 3 BDC dots; or circle, dot, 3 BDC dots, and 3 BDC ranging lines. This can be toggled by holding the minus (-) button on the left of the housing for 3 seconds for each configuration.
Brightness settings can be adjusted using the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons on the left side of the housing and there are 12 settings to toggle between: 8 daylight and 4 night vision compatible.
The BDC dots for the SPR increase in holdover range from top to bottom. The center dot is perfect for close quarters shooting and appropriate for shooting at 100 yards. Below the center dot is the BDC dot and ranging lines for 300 yards and below that, 400 yards and below that, 500 yards.
The use of the ARO EVO with SPR reticle can be enhanced with the addition of the Holosun HM3X or HM6X magnifiers for a 3X or 6X magnification. The Holosun ARO EVO with SPR and the Holosun HM3X and HM6X magnifiers can be found on Freedom Gorilla.

Main Features of the SPR Reticle
SPR stands for Special Purpose Reticle. This reticle is essentially replacing the MRS reticle, and at the moment, is only an available option with the Holosun ARO EVO red dot rifle optic. The ARO EVO is also available with a 2 MOA dot only option. Here are a couple of the specifications for the ARO EVO with the Special Purpose Reticle:

How The SPR Reticle Is Different from Traditional MRS

The SPR was designed to be an alternative to the MRS with the addition of some features. With an MRS, or multi reticle system, you have the option of a dot only, circle only, or circle and dot together. The MRS had a 2 MOA dot and a 65 MOA circle
The SPR has a 1.5 MOA dot and 65 MOA circle, but also adds the feature of 3 BDC, bullet drop compensation, dots and three horizontal ranging lines associated with those dots that represent an 18” wide target. The 65 MOA ring is a quartered ring with four partial lines that don’t intersect to form a crosshair.
The circle gives a fast sight picture in close quarters and the ring lines help you find the dot quickly.
Ranging Feature for SPR Reticle
The main dot of the SPR is perfect for a range of about 100 yards, and the three 1 MOA BDC dots and range lines indicate the holdovers at 300, 400, and 500 yards. These are calibrated for 5.56 M196 ballistic ammunition for increased accuracy at intermediate distances.
In order to compensate for bullet drop, you will use the dot, or dot and horizontal ranging line, at the appropriate yardage. The first BDC dot below the main dot is for 300 yards, so you will use that dot and ranging line to line up the target at a distance of 300 yards.
The second BDC dot below the main center dot is for 400 yards, and the third and final BDC dot and ranging line below the center dot is for holdovers at 500 yards.
Toggling Through Configurations for the SPR Reticle
Switching between configurations with the Special Purpose Reticle is simple. If you just have it set to dot, just hold the minus (-) button down for 3 seconds, and it will add the circle so you have both the circle and dot.
Hold down the minus button for another 3 more seconds and you will have the dot, circle, and the 3 BDC dots. Hold it down for another 3 seconds and the reticle will have its complete configuration of a dot, circle, the 3 BDC dots, and the 3 BDC range lines.
Battery Life and Using the Solar Failsafe for the SPR Reticle

The ARO EVO SPR uses a replaceable CR2032 battery, which can be accessed via a side panel on the optic. This means the battery can be replaced while still mounted, and it simply requires a tool so you can easily slide the battery tray out.
The Holosun ARO EVO SPR has a battery life of 50k hours, and also comes with a solar failsafe in the form of a solar panel on the top of the optic. The solar panel allows you to use the reticle in ambient light in case the battery dies.
Toggling Through Brightness Settings
The SPR for the ARO EVO has 12 brightness settings, the same with the dot only and MRS options. There are 8 daylight options and 4 night vision compatible settings. You can simply adjust the brightness with the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons on the left side of the housing.
You can also toggle between manual brightness mode and automatic brightness mode. During auto brightness mode, the solar panel takes in ambient light and adjusts according to the brightness. Holding the plus (+) button for 3 seconds will switch your reticle between auto and manual brightness modes.
Using the Shake Awake Technology
Like many of Holosun’s optics, the ARO EVO SPR uses the patented Shake Awake technology. The reticle will automatically shut off after a certain period of inactivity, you have your choice of 10 minutes, 1 hour, 12 hours, or you can turn the feature off.
To adjust the sleep mode, you will hold the plus (+) button for 10 seconds to enter sleep time adjustment mode. You can then momentarily press the plus or minute buttons to toggle between the times. The LED will blink to correspond to which option you have chosen: 1 blink = 10 minutes, 2 blinks = 1 hour, 3 blinks = 12 hours, and 4 blinks = sleep mode deactivated. Press both the plus and minus buttons to save the sleep mode settings.
When sleep mode is deactivated, you will have to manually turn the ARO EVO SPR optic off and on by pressing both the plus and minus buttons. While Shake Awake is on, the optic will turn back on when it senses motion with the last settings prior to sleep.
Using the Magnifiers
The SPR is also designed to be paired with a 3x or 6x magnifier, specifically the Holosun HM3X and HM6X. These magnifiers assist in image clarity while shooting at intermediate range, increasing your accuracy and can be placed in front of the ARO EVO.
