Romeo X Compact vs Holosun 507K: A Comprehensive Guide

Sig Sauer Romeo X Compact vs Holosun 507K X2: A Comprehensive Guide

Steve Hensley |

Hey Freedom Gorillas, today we’re going to break down two similar optics to help you decide which is the best option for you: the Sig Sauer Romeo x Compact vs. Holosun 507K X2. Although both sights are similar in multiple aspects, both also showcase some differences that may sway you.

So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty, starting with the main specifications of both sights.

Key Takeaways

The main differences between the Holosun 507K and the Romeo X Compact are that the 507K has a modified RMSc footprint, a.k.a. K Series footprint, and the Romeo X Compact has an RMSc footprint. This means the Romeo X Compact will fit on slides with an RMSc footprint without needing an adapter plate, such as the Glock 43X or Springfield Hellcat. Aside from that, the Romeo X Compact is made in the Philippines and costs more than the Holosun 507K, which is made in China and Malaysia.

Other notable differences are that the Romeo X Compact has a protrusion on the side which houses the battery, while the 507K has a more uniform housing and the battery compartment is seamlessly integrated into the housing. The Romeo X Compact also comes in FDE Housing, and the 507K Does not.

There are multiple versions of the Romeo X Compact: versions with red or green reticles, and then versions with a circle dot, 3 MOA dot, or 6 MOA dot. The 507K comes in red or green reticle colors and the MRS (circle dot) reticle, if you wanted a 6 MOA you would have to get the 407K and if you wanted a 3 MOA you could look into the 507K ACSS Vulcan.

Reticle System

Now, let’s discuss the reticle system for both models. The Romeo X Compact is an open emitter and is available with a red or green reticle option. For the circle dot option It uses a 2 MOA Dot and 32 MOA Ring that is like a circle, and buttons on the side allow you to cycle through either dot only, ring only, or both ring and dot. It is also available with a 6 MOA dot and 3 MOA dot.

The Holosun 507K is also an open emitter, but you can choose either a red or green reticle. This sight also features a 2 MOA Dot and 32 MOA Ring with buttons that allow you to cycle through dot only, ring only, or both ring and dot. The MOA Ring on the Holosun has hatches in it like a crosshair, whereas the Romeo X Compact has a clean outer circle ring.

You can co witness with both sights, however, the Romeo X Compact uses fiber optic sights to assist with co witnessing.

Battery and Battery Life

For Romeo X Compact vs. Holosun 507K when it comes to battery life, it’s about the same.

Although they both use the CR1632 battery, the Holosun can last up to 50,000 hours (nearly 5.5 years) when set to the dot only reticle. When using the outer ring plus dot, the Holosun matches the battery life of the Romeo X Compact at 20,000 hours.

Some users of the Romeo X Compact have reported that the 20,000-hour battery life is often an overestimate, while those who have used the Holosun 507K have reported that the battery life can last between 20,000 and 50,000 hours, depending on the reticle setting.

Both sights use a replaceable battery, which can be replaced without removing the sight from the weapon. The Holosun 507K uses a horizontal battery tray that can simply slide out from the side of the optic while the Romeo X Compact uses a vertical battery tray that can be easily unscrewed from the side.

This gives the Romeo X Compact sight more bulk, which can sometimes be distracting by catching your eye while the Holosun 507K has an asymmetrical housing shape.

Motion Sensor vs. Shake Awake

In order to conserve battery life, both optics will shut off after a certain amount of time, but will turn back on thanks to their own activation technology.

The Holosun 507K uses Holosun’s trademark Shake Awake feature. This optic will automatically shut off after a period of inactivity, but will reactivate once it senses motion. You have your choice of 10 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours of inactivity before automatically shutting off.

It will also remember the last brightness setting so you won’t have to readjust after shaking awake. This feature can also be disabled.

The Romeo X Compact uses Sig Sauer’s MOTAC or Motion Activated Illumination. This concept is similar to the Shake Awake; the Romeo X Compact automatically shuts off after 2 minutes of inactivity and will come back on after it senses motion. As with the Shake Awake feature, the MOTAC system also saves the last brightness setting before the optic shuts off.

Brightness settings

For Romeo X Compact vs. Holosun 507K, the brightness can be a deciding factor since there are some differences. For one, the Romeo X Compact has 15 different brightness settings. There are 12 for daytime use and 3 night vision compatible modes.

The Holosun 507K has 12 brightness settings with 10 for daytime use and 2 night vision compatible modes. For both optics, the brightness can be adjusted using two buttons on the side. This makes it easy to change brightness without compromising your current sight.

Composition and Material

Both the Romeo X Compact and the Holosun 507K have a 7075 T6 aluminum housing, making them lightweight and durable. The main difference for the Romeo X Compact vs. Holosun 507K in composition is the waterproof rating.

The Romeo X Compact has a rating of IPX7, and the Holosun 507K has a waterproof rating of IP67, which is essentially the same rating and means that the optic can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

The Romeo X Compact comes in your choice of a FDE or black housing while the 507K only comes in black. In terms of manufacturing, the Romeo X is made in the Philippines while the Holosun 507K is made in China and Malaysia.

Similarities

There are quite a few similarities between both optics:

  • Both are intended for use on smaller subcompact and micro compact pistols like the Glock 43X, Sig P365, and Springfield Hellcat.
  • Both come in red or green reticles and have variants, or similar optics with the MRS reticle (circle + dot), 6 MOA, or 3 MOA dots.
  • Both have manual brightness modes with night vision brightness modes
  • Both have similar battery life
  • Both have auto on and off features
  • Both have side removable batteries
  • Both have the same water proof ratings
  • Both have the same housing materials

Differences

Here are some differences to keep on your radar:

  • The Sig Romeo X Compact is about $100 more than the Holosun 507K without really any major upgrades or benefits
  • The Romeo X Compact has an RMSc footprint, while the 507K has a K series footprint. If you had a Glock 43X or Springfield Hellcat, this means you would need to buy an adapter plate to fit the Holosun 507K which would be an extra $40+. If you had a K series slide cut like the Sig P365, both will fit with no adapter plate needed.
  • The Sig is made in the Philippines, while the Holosun is made in China and Malaysia
  • The circle dot reticle is a circle outer ring on the sig, and is a hashed crosshair style on the Holosun.
  • The battery compartment on the Sig protrudes outward and can create a lopsided look that can distract your eye, whereas the Holosun housing is asymmetrical and less distracting.
  • The Sig has a slightly lower deck height and fiber optics in the rear dovetails, whereas the 507K has backup rear dovetails but no fiber optic in them.

Which Do I Buy?

Now the big question: which optic is the best for you? Well, this comes down to your preferences. Both optics are durable, compact, feature a similar reticle system, have a replaceable battery, and their own trademark motion activation system. But there are some subtle differences that may appeal to you. So, let’s review these notable differences:

Notable Differences

The sight you choose will depend greatly on the differences between the sights. Here is a list of differences to help you decide which is best for you:

Reticles: The Romeo X Compact has more reticle options and comes with a circle dot option (2 MOA dot and 32 MOA circle), 3 MOA dot option, or 6 MOA dot option, while the 507K is circle dot. Holosun offers the 407K, if you are looking for a 6 MOA dot and the 507K ACSS Vulcan, if you are looking for a 3 MOA dot option.

Pricing: The Romeo X Compact is the more expensive choice

Size: The Holosun 507K is slimmer coming in at 0.98 in compared to Romeo X Compact’s 1.22 in width

Deck Height: Romeo X Compact has a slightly lower deck height (6.57mm) compared to the Holosun 507K (7.04mm)  to help you co witness with your iron sights.

Footprint: The Holosun 507K has a Modified-RMSc footprint designed to directly mount to specific guns while the Romeo X Compact has an RMSc footprint. The modified RMSc of the Holosun 507K means it is missing two rear notches that the Romeo X Compact has. This means you may need an adapter plate for the 507K which may add on to the deck height and will be an extra purchase.

MOTAC vs. Shake Awake: When it comes to motion activation technology with the Romeo X Compact vs. Holosun 507K, the main difference is the time you have of inactivity before it turns off—10 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours for the Holosun 507K and 2 minutes for the Romeo X Compact. Both the Shake Awake and MOTAC can be turned off for the optics, however the time of inactivity can only be adjusted on the Holosun not on the Romeo X Compact.

32 MOA Ring: The Romeo X Compact’s MOA Ring is a circle while Holosun 507K’s MOA Ring has hatches, making it like a crosshair.

Co Witnessing: The Romeo X Compact has fiber optic in the rear dovetails of the housing and lower deck height than the 507K for better co witnessing. The 507K doesn't have fiber optics but does have backup rear irons in the housing.
